Oh, how some ladies dread it! And to be honest, there probably isn’t anyone who really looks forward to having one. It’s not fun or even funny (this version is – thanks Ellen!) but most of us know that mammograms can detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, when it is the most treatable.

With the exception of skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer that women may face in their lifetime. Yes, being a woman is the main risk for breast cancer. Men do get breast cancer, but it is about 100 times more common in women than in men. It can occur in a woman at any age (here’s a compelling story of a local, young woman facing it), but it is seen more in women who are over the age of 40…and the risk goes up with age.

Other factors cause some women to have a greater chance of having breast cancer than others.

Just how beneficial are mammograms? The ACS recommends that Women age 40 and older have a screening mammogram every year and should keep on doing so for as long as they are in good health. While mammograms can miss some cancers, they are still a very good at finding breast cancer.

At Brigham City Community Hospital we realize that you might have some hesitation over having a mammogram. We want to assure you that we will welcome you to our Women’s Center, and strive to provide you with the most pleasant experience possible when you have this procedure done with us.

What’s more, if you have your mammogram with us during the month of October 2012, we’ll be happy to send you out the door with a free “Fight like a Girl” to end breast cancer umbrella.

Just call us at 435.734.4214
